Green Roofs: The Future, or NOW!

You would think that “Green or Eco” roofing would be a fairly new trend when it comes to living green; however, that’s not the case. According to Greenroof.org (www.greenroof.org), “Green or Eco” Roofing has been well established in Europe for year through government intervention and support.  Germany has been using modern green roof technology since the early seventies (Sources: Green Roof Technology website- http://www.greenrooftechnology.com/history-of-green-roofs).

So what are some of the benefits? The International Green Roof Association (www.irga-world.com) gives a list of benefits such as:

  • decreased noise levels,
  • acts as heat shield and assist in storm water retention
  • decreased dust and smog levels
  • acts as a natural habitat for animals and plants

Here in Toronto, a bylaw was passed with regards to the construction of Green or “Eco” Roof in 2009; being the first of its kind in North America. Along with the creation of an Eco Roof” Incentive program, these initiatives are key to the city’s Climate Change Action Plan.  In total, Toronto has 135 built green roof that are both publicly and private owned. About rascom1

Enthusiastic, entrepreneurial believer in using greener, sustainable methods to build new and to maintain old structures. I spent many years promoting the use of Insulated Concrete Form construction in building envelopes, and the last few years engaged in retrofitting old mechanical (hvac) systems in condominium, rental and commercial buildings, taking advantage of recent rebate programs that gave money back to people willing to invest in reducing energy consumption. I strongly believe we need to to things better, be kinder to both ourselves and the environment! For the kids, people, for the kids!!!! :)
